'Oscars' honour lifetime and life-saving achievements

ONE of the industry's longest-serving employees and five other true railway heroes were due to be honoured at RAIL'S National Rail Awards 2019, in front of another bumper four-figure audience at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on September 19. Having started his career at Waterloo in 1961, South Western Railway Welcome Host Jeffrey Fry has been recognised with the first ever NRA Lifetime Achievement award, to celebrate his 58 years of dedicated service. Described by his colleagues as "always willing to help" and "100% reliable", Fry has spent almost all of his career at the same station and is now affectionately known among his colleagues as 'Number One'.
