RAIB investigates Balham 'irregularity'

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is investigating what it calls an "operational irregularity" near Balham station in south London on April 20. A passenger train running from London Victoria to East Grinstead crossed a junction less than two minutes before a tamping machine that was travelling in the opposite direction. The tamper was making an unsignalled movement that had not been correctly authorised when it left an engineering possession.
