WHETHER or not you believe that Keith Williams' railway review will achieve lasting improvements, it does at least provide a chance to look at why steel wheels on steel rails provides benefits to this small and populous island. In the first of what will be a series of documents, Williams looks at some of rail's basic figures. Well-known is the doubling of passenger figures over the two decades since privatisation, but less heard is the fact that even with the huge increase in demand, rail still only accounts for just 2% of all trips and 8% of distance travelled. Cars account for 61% and 78% respectively.
