All non-barrier open level crossings are to be inspected by the Office of Rail Regulation over the next 12 months, as part of a new safety campaign.rnThe initiative also included a recommendation to increase the penalties for vehicle drivers who jump level crossings. The request has gone to the Sentencing Guidelines Council. The ORR also said it would continue to support the Law Commission's work to 'update level crossing legislation so that it is fit for purpose for the 21st century'.rnThe ORR will publish revised guidance on level crossings by next spring.
