A total of 4.42 billion net tonne-km of freight was moved on Network Rail in Quarter 3 of 2016-17, according to ORR statistics published on February 23. This was down by 2.8% from Q3 2015-16. In Q3 this year domestic intermodal and construction accounted for just over 60% of total freight moved, and were amongst the five of the seven commodity groups which recorded a year-on-year increase. Domestic intermodal was up 5.2% at 1.72 billion net tonne-km, which according to ORR is the highest figure recorded since the quarterly time series began in Q1 1998-99. ORR suggests that this increase may be due to 'growth in consumer-focused service industries such as retail'.
