Inmarsat 505 Non-SOLAS Voice Distress Service

Since the launch of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Inmarsat's satellites and associated maritime terminals have been a key element in Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Now they have launched a non-SOLAS voice distress service. Inmarsat has a constellation of 11 geostationary satellites, providing voice and high-speed data services to the maritime, land mobile, land portable and aeronautical markets. The latest addition to Inmarsat's portfolio of maritime services is FleetBroadband, with the FleetBroadband 500, 250 and 150 terminals. They can be used to send e-mails, get real-time electronic chart and weather updates, access the internet and company intranets, for crew communications, to send vessel and engine telemetry, for text and instant messaging, to store and forward video and for videoconferencing - virtually everything you can do with a 3G mobile phone. However, they are not GMDSS compliant.
