Let's start with a look at what happens when you try to send a data signal through a communications medium. Data signals normally comprise square waves with very sharp edges as shown in Fig. 1. The initial problem with this type of data is that the square corners require a very wide bandwidth to reproduce accurately. In practice, this bandwidth requirement can be reduced significantly if the square wave is modified to have rounded corners as in Fig. 2.
