Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, 5D Years On

On April 23rd, 2019, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell (b. 1943) gave a fascinating lecture at Ashfield Comprehensive School in Kirkby (Fig. 1). The event had been arranged by the Sherwood Observatory for their members and students at the school. Dame Jocelyn lectured on her historic discovery of pulsars, as well as other fields of radio astronomy and research.Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a distinguished astrophysicist in the radio astronomical field. On 28th November 1967, she discovered the strange radio signals that caused a scientific frenzy around the world. Before ascertaining exactly what they were, the signals were briefly presumed to have been of extraterrestrial origin, and, famously, they were labelled 'LGM-1' (LGM = 'Little Green Men'; Verschuur,2015:103).
