摘要

I am writing this month's column in Mongolia! I have just spent a few hours in the WPX CW contest operating from Ulaanbaatar as JT1FBW with 1kW and a Create 714XL antenna (3 elements on 40m, 4 elements on 20m & 15m) up at about 120ft. Below I offer an insight into what it's like to contest from out here, and also compare it to my experiences in Indonesia (YB7) last year. During the SSB leg of WPX in 1996 I was lucky enough to be in Indonesia. Some people, I suspect, would view Mongolia and Indonesia as being in the same broad part of the world. In fact, the two countries are many thousands of kilometres apart. One of the common themes is that there are many Japanese stations active and workable from both these parts of the world for large portions of the contest. Indeed, when the band has gone dead to other parts of the world, the Japanese still seem to be there in numbers.
