Epiphytes For the Third World

Most radio amateurs do not build anything these days. Most of those who do consider single-sideband equipment to be beyond their competence. The Epiphyte is a remarkable little transceiver which has introduced many QRP operators to the pleasure of building their own SSB equipment. Designed by Derry Spittle, VE7QK, it came out of actual need. Derry frequently journeys into wilderness areas in British Columbia and needed reliable radio communication from what can be difficult places. Beyond the range of VHF repeaters, simple battery operated HF equipment offers the only practical means of communication. Derry's objective was to build a small transceiver capable of providing effective voice communication with the British Columbia Public Service Net on 3729kHz from anywhere in the province.
