How many times has a signal been too strong for the experiment you wish to carry out? It could be from an oscillator on the bench, or from signals from an aerial overpowering a mixer. Other applications are if you are interested in DF and need to attenuate the signal when getting close to the sought transmitter, or if you have a problem with a TV signal being too strong and causing ghosting on other signals (cross modulation).
