The validation procedures introduced last October have been dis cussed in previous IOTA columns and are set out in detail in the 7997 RSGB IOTA Directory and Yearbook. An operation from an all-time new one will be given a provisional IOTA reference number, eg 'AF-077 (PROV)' until the validation data is received and approved. When approved the reference becomes AF-077 without the (PROV). In cases of the all-time new ones where the validation material has not been received checkpoints are not authorised to process QSL cards. This also applies to operations from the rare IOTA groups identified on pages 22 to 28 of the 1997 Directory/Yearbook.
