An Introduction To The CRT

The cathode ray tube (CRT) is the most flexible measuring instrument in the electronics laboratory. Its construction is relatively simple, and has remained essentially constant since its invention by Braun in 1897. A selection of those commonly available to the amateur is shown in right. The BASIC oscilloscope CRT is shown in Fig 1, using its standard circuit symbol, which is very similar to its actual construction. Very much an electronic 'ship-in-a-bottle', all its electrodes are contained inside an evacuated glass envelope.
