Fiction writers don't usually have a significant impact on the world of science, but a notable and well recognised exception to the rule is Arthur C Clarke, author of the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. Those with an interest in communications will immediately recognise Mr Clarke as the inventor of the concept of geostationary satellites, one of the most significant advances made this century in radio communications systems. This fact has also been recognised by a group called The Arthur C Clarke Foundation, who have created a web site which it is hoped will become a historical record of major scientific themes on which Arthur C Clarke's life and work has had a profound-effect.
