59 years ago, as a newcomer limited to 10 watts DC input and using a two-valve battery regenerative receiver, I did not find 14MHz DX contacts plentiful, but they did include Australia, Rhodesia and a few South and North Americans. I can assure you that they gave me a real kick that cannot be equalled with modern 100 watt transceivers. But it also left me with a high respect for simple regenerative-detector receivers, provided the regeneration can be smoothly and accurately adjusted around the point of oscillation. Such detectors can cope well with CW and SSB, and reasonably welL with AM and NBFM. It was the regenerative detector that opened up the 'short waves' for all but a tiny majority of amateurs in those pre-WW2 days.
