A couple of years ago, a TT item 'Is home brew and DIY servicing passing into history?' (February 1996, p74) drew attention to the continuing problem of 'dry' soldered joints developing after new equipment has been working well for some months. "Oxidation, heat cycles and the like, can affect any less than perfectly soldered joint, and result in an intermittent or continuous high resistance or open connection." It was noted that even for professionals the time taken to trace intermittent faults can quickly mount up and result in high costs, despite the fact that nothing has to be replaced.
