On 1 November, the man once described by the Guinness Book of Records as "the world's greatest living explorer", Sir Ranulph Fiennes, starts an attempt on one of the world's last unconquered challenges: the first-ever unsupported, no resupply, solo crossing of the Antarctic continent. RSGB members Morag and Lawrence Howell, GM0MUV and GM4DMA, are essential members of Sir Ranulph's team, handling the communications and acting as Base Camp leaders in Antarctica and the UK. Both are veterans of several Antarctic expeditions, and Lawrence last featured in RadCom News and on the cover of the September '96 edition, having helped a Raleigh International expedition to Uganda.
