Today's radio amateur has a wide variety of operating modes to choose from in this, the last decade of the century. Comparing the modem radio amateur with the amateur who first became licensed 40 or 50 years ago is much like comparing the Jaguar XK220 with the Austin 7. The advent of the computer has made this possible, plus the commercial manufacturers producing numerous rigs for us to use. There are so many possibilities to choose from when deciding what to use from the data modes, that it requires some serious thought before proceeding.
