There are many instances in the amateur radio world where one might want to turn a piece of equipment on or off at a distance. This may be as basic as operating the transmitter in the shack whilst outside adjusting an antenna, to activating a microwave beacon on a bleak hilltop site 70km away in the middle of the night. Beacons and repeaters must be able to be shut down on demand, and a remote shut-off facility on these obviates the need to find closedown operators who can get to the site - in all weathers - within the mandated time.
