It is clear that industry is becoming increasingly interested in the question of the future role of software-defined radio (SDR). At present, the pace is still being set by the large involvement of the military in the USA. According to a feature article by David March 'Software-Defined Radio Breaks Cover', in EDN-Europe (March 2005, pp19 -22, 24, 26, 28), the US military has earmarked as much as $25 billion for SDR development through the US Joint Tactical Radio System initiative. The US Department of Defense is working with agencies in Canada, Japan, Sweden and the UK to foster SDR development.
