EI5CD, in the September RadCom, asks for reports on the over-the-horizon (OTH) radar interference he is hearing-especially on 40m. Here on the West coast of the USA, we are only too aware of this menace which originates in China - it has been going on for 2 to 3 years now and is quite reminiscent of the Russian 'woodpecker' that we all suffered from 20 years ago. The Chinese signal is a raspy buzz - we refer to it as the roaring of the Chinese dragon. It is very loud on the 40m band where it makes DXing difficult, but it also spreads across other bands at times. Stations in VK and 9M6 tell me that they have to suspend 40m operation completely when the OTH radar comes on. The only saving grace is that, in the past at least, the radar has not been transmitting every day - maybe 4 or 5 days per week.
