The 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, has always been empty apart from occasional, temporary use. Sculptor Anthony Gormley wanted to create a living monument and, to this end, organised the One & Other project, the latest commission for the Fourth Plinth rolling programme of temporary contemporary art installations funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England. Starting in July 2009, for 100 days and nights, ordinary people of the UK could spend one hour on top of the plinth doing whatever they wanted.
