Written by a crew member of HMS Petard, this fine book provides a very detailed analysis of that ship'srnvital role in capturing secret code books and data from U-995 in the Eastern Mediterranean. 1942 was a bad year for the Allies because Admiral Doenitz, the German U-Boat commander, fearing that the Enigma code had been broken, added a 4th wheel to the Naval Enigma machine. This change halted the code breaking success of Bletchley and marked the start of a long, 10 month period with no successful U-Boat intercepts. Also during this time, the Atlantic U-Boat fleet was increasing rapidly and Britain was being starved out of the war.
