Amateur radio is in an interesting period. Any observer would have to conclude that traditional amateur radio activity such as rag-chewing, be it on phone or CW, is on the decline. After all, if we want to exchange a few words every day with Tony in Melbourne or Jerry in Denver, we'll use the internet. The only time that the bands are buzzing seems to be either a major DXpedition is on or a contest is taking place, which suggests our use of the HF bands has changed markedly in recent years, a fact that the anti-contesting lobby choose to ignore. But, contesting itself in terms of the actual structure of the contests has remained very static for years. By and large, you make as many contacts in a set period of time with as many multipliers, be it countries or locator squares as you can. All good. Very traditionally, this has all been done either on phone or on CW.
