You can sometime find out what is available beforehand, for example the SOTA summit database [1] often has useful information on what shelter is available on hilltops. Another useful source of information is the Geograph website [2] that has pictures of just about everywhere in the UK. Temporary shelter can often be sought behind walls, using trees and the landform itself.
