摘要

There remain a number of important unanswered questions relating to our understanding of the CFTR gene and protein. The search for potential alternative functions of CFTR in addition to its activity as a chloride ion channel is an important focus. We need to know more about how different mutations in the CFTR gene actually cause specific phenotypic presentations of CF. Further therapeutic innovations are called for and until gene therapy is actually proven to be an effective option, studies into alternative potential treatments of CF, such as pharmacological therapy, should be encouraged.
