He was called a curmudgeon by PBS, criticized for his instructional style, and appreciated for his dry sense of humor. W. Edwards Deming, however, also was warm, charming, humane, and caring. I heard him speak for the first time on January 23, 1992; the following day, I became his "adopted daughter." For the next two years, I had the privilege of accompanying him on many occasions. He was a friend, companion, mentor, and confidant.
