In many situations, data come to us in the form of curves or time series rather than disconnected "scatters" of data values. A few examples are traces on an oscilloscope, chromatograms from chemical analyses, temperature traces of furnaces over time, daily sales figures over time, stock prices over time, and multichannel readouts of forces on a mechanical structure from a test protoco.
