The truism "form follows function" has been a longtime principle of architectural design. Office buildings are designed with individual and group workspaces; factories have production spaces, as well as storage areas for raw materials and finished product; residential buildings are designed with food prep and dining areas, sleeping rooms and communal recreational spaces. The physical structure, or "built environment," is designed to help the people working and living in it to be as productive and happy as possible.
