Most workdays, you'll find me in front of a computer, where much of my research, learning and observation takes place. For better or worse, that's the way it is-we don't have a ton of time to spend in the field. So when I'm able to broaden my horizons by traveling the world a bit, my bags are packed before you can say "bon voyage."During a recent trip to Europe, we toured the BMW Welt facility in Munich, where we witnessed first-hand some of the advanced manufacturing technologies outlined in this month's Progress Report article "Change Ahead." I was especially struck by how closely the employees worked with robots-just like what you see in pictures and videos, but this time in real life. Many of the technologies shown on the tour-and others you can't observe visually-will influence manufacturing now and into the future. Read about cobots, 5G manufacturing, human augmentation and more beginning on p. 10, and see how these advances might influence your 2020 plans. With technology comes change, and with change comes the need to manage it. This month's cover story, "Special Delivery," p. 18, discusses the value of change packages in ushering along knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. This articleexplains these summative documents' usefulness, as well as how to complete them for your own projects.
