Hopen, Past ASQ Chair and JQP Editor, Dies

Deborah Hopen, the first female ASQ chair and the long-time editor of ASQ's Journal for Quality and Participation (JQP), died in early April after battling lingering health issues. She was 67. Hopen's involvement with ASQ and her contributions to the quality community were wide and deep. Since joining ASQ in 1979, Hopen connected with countless members and influenced many areas of ASQ's mission at local, regional and national levels. She was active in leadership roles in several ASQ divisions and committees, as well as the ASQ Seattle Section. She served as chair and president from 1995 to 1997 and reached elite membership status as an ASQ fellow. "I knew I came first in her life, but ASQ was always close on my heels," said Hopen's daughter, Elizabeth Peotter. 'It was her second child. The people of ASQ were her family. It was a legion-sized family. It was clear that she was going to continue her work for them as long as she could."
