If the construction of new homes in the United States were to have the same success rate as the development of new computer applications, the American urban landscape would resemble a war zone, and only the very rich would be able to afford their own homes. Of every 100 new homes started, more than a third would never be completed at all and would be abandoned in various stages of disrepair. More than half the homes that did get finished would end up costing nearly twice as much as originally estimated and would also take more than twice as long to build. To make matters worse, these homes would be completed with only two-thirds of the originally planned floor space or rooms. On average, only around 16 homes would be completed on time and on budget.
