The saying "History has a way of repeating itself" is true—though I would amend it to say history has a way of inventing itself. In the 1800s German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel made an observation about the history of thought. He saw that any new idea was quickly met by a confronting concept and these two ideas eventually blended into a compromise position. This idea is called the Hegelian dialectic.
