A Pilot's Point of View

As private pilot for the past 25 years and an aircraft owner for more than 10 years, I thought I had been exposed to nearly every aspect of general aviation operations. My engineering background and a natural curiosity about mechanical devices made maintaining my 1956 Champion 7EC a priority. With the help of a patient and supportive mechanic, I learned the basics of aircraft ownership and proper maintenance. Safety is the watchword for all aspects of aviation, whether flying a small, light private aircraft or serving as the captain on a Boeing 777. Seemingly simple things (from a basic nonstructural bolt to an engine cylinder or propeller, from structural performance to quality requirements) fall under the watchful eye of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
