On april 12, 2001, a feeling of energy and celebration spread throughout the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus of Penn State University, where 38 exhibitor booths were set up in the ballroom for the ninth annual Quality Expo. Teams made up of about 350 members representing 26 administrative and academic units from the university were demonstrating the results quality improvement can achieve. Faculty, staff, administrators and students mingled, studied video and poster displays, asked questions, gleaned best practices and shared their own experiences with continuous quality improvement (CQI).
