Despite advances in e-mail technology, mass mailings remain an integral communication tool for large organizations, especially colleges and universities. While many colleges and universities have successfully enhanced their Web pages to include secure links for grade retrieval, registration and other services, several schools still use mass mailing to reach prospective and current students and alumni. Prospective students might receive admissions materials, university catalogs and scholarship information. Current students receive account statements and financial aid award information. Alumni might receive information about campus events such as homecomings and fundraisers. Colleges and universities use mass mailings for several reasons:1. Even though it is 2003, not every-one has an e-mail address.2. There are people who simply prefer snail mail.3. College students are known to use multiple e-mail accounts and change e-mail addresses frequently. It is difficult enough to keep track of a student's local and permanent street addresses, let alone e-mail addresses.
