Many quality improvement projects require some form of experimentation on a process. A chemical engineer may wish to determine the settings for certain process variables to optimize a critical quality characteristic of the resulting product. A materials engineer may run a plastic injection molding process using different grades of raw material to determine which produces the least variability in breaking strength.
