Unfortunately, when organizations are asked about improving performance compared with competitors, the most common response is couched in financial terms, such as revenue or profitability. As a result, many other important metrics that could help put the organization in a more advantageous position are ignored. This oversight can be addressed by comparing the key metrics across the four key dimensions of a balanced scorecard: financials, client/market, operational excellence and HR (see Figure 1).
