Globalization, as well as from people, business and technology, require organizations to deliver high-quality performance to remain competitive.1 Quality methods such as Six Sigma can address these rapidly changing and increasing customer expectations. As more organizations adopt Six Sigma methods, however, it may be useful to assess the maturity level of their Six Sigma systems and programs to identify problem areas and opportunities for continuous improvement. To aid that effort, a standard model can help organizations evaluate and increase the level of their Six Sigma programs' maturity. Program maturity has been used in part to select recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award2 and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Maturity Level Award for Capability Maturity Model (CMM) software.3 Each of these awards requires organizations to document and demonstrate maturity in their processes. Award recipients become models of success for other organizations.
