One Of History's more dramatic innovations, the incandescent light bulb, was the result of research and development by many inventors around the world. Thomas Edison led the effort to combine several technologies into a longer-lasting bulb, which was the preferred method of illuminating homes, businesses and city streets for more than 100 years. This breakthrough innovation led to the establishment of the General Electric Co. (GE). Over the years, the light bulb went through many refinements-or incremental innovations-and hundreds of millions of incandescent bulbs have been sold every year since the early part of the 20th century.
