Taken for Granted

摘要

Recently, I attended a gathering of senior quality practitioners. The topic discussed was the merit of promoting quality as something that should underpin every aspect of society. The debate was invigorating as speakers voiced their hopes for quality in areas such as healthcare, tourism, manufacturing, banking and retail. In a very short time, it became obvious the task of promoting quality would be enormous—not only in its possibilities, but also in its complexity. It was time to bring some rational reasoning to the discussion. As quality practitioners, we dissected the issue using the tools of analysis and categorization. Unfortunately, we also began to dissect quality. This is always a futile exercise because quality matters in every endeavor, and it's up to the interested parties in that endeavor to decide what quality entails.
