Does quality depend on context? While many of the principles and practices of quality management are universal-as explained by quality gurus such as W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran and Phillip B. Crosby-there are aspects of quality that are different for diverse organizations, and other variables must be taken into consideration.These other variables usually are described as the context in which the organization operates. The term "context" generally refers to variables such as size, ownership, environment and technology. This article describes a study that examines the effect of context on quality in an area that is of utmost importance to people and organizations-the quality of healthcare provided by hospitals.
