In Northeast Ontario, Canada, hospitals have historically been the prime providers of all facets of healthcare. Few community services existed, which resulted in a generation that believed you would recuperate fully in a hospital, and as you aged and could no longer cope at home, hospitalization to await long-term care was the norm. This perception also was prevalent amongst care providers. Changing culture has been vital to improve patient access to care and shift to community-based care.
