Ceos said threats and opportunities are coming faster and with less predictability than at any time in the past, according to results from an IBM global CEO survey.1 These threats and opportunities intertwine to create increasing complexity, which CEOs said was the biggest challenge facing their organizations. CEOs identified creativity as the single most important leadership competency required to address this challenge of complexity. They also saw the need to equip an entire organization to be creative rather than isolate creative people in departments such as R&D. They said employees at all levels must question "the way we've always done things." Creativity is the first step on the road to innovation, and innovation has become vital for an organization to survive. Leaders of organizations have also expressed concern about the loss of creativity as a byproduct of implementing a quality management system. As a member of ISO Technical Committee 176, which is responsible for the development of ISO 9001,I regularly hear this complaint: The improvement component of the standard has not brought the improvement that corporate leaders seek and instead has made organizations more rigid and less able to adopt new ideas.
