If you were a Novice licensee in the 1950s or '60s and had already constructed a regenerative receiver or small transmitter, you may have been ready to tackle the challenge of a superheterodyne ("superhet") receiver. Given the superhet's complexity, building one and getting it to work was a real achievement. There were several good projects, both in QST and The Radio Amateur's Handbook, designed to be within the ken of the motivated beginner.
