Amateur Radio and the National Scout Jamboree

Next to the annual Jamboree On-The-Air (JOTA), an international Scouting event held every October with up to 500,000 participants, the quadrennial Boy Scout National Jamboree showcases Amateur Radio to more youth than any other single event in the world. The first Boy Scout Handbook published in 1911 contains diagrams for building a "wireless receiver and spark-gap transmitter," and the first Radio Merit Badge was offered in 1923. Because of the intense heat and humidity the side flaps of the tent are lifted during the day.
