For the French paper industry 2003 was mainly characterised by the generally poor state of the market as well as by intense competitive and price pressure. This was the statement made by the French association of the pulp, paper and board industry COPACEL (Confederation francaise de I'in-dustrie des papiers, cartons et celluloses) on the occasion of its annual press conference in Paris. The association says that viewed overall the French paper industry did not recover in 2003 as no noti- ceable improvement was registered in the most important factors for growth: advert-sing investment froze at the previous year's poor level, household consumption failed to rise, printers' capacity utilisation improved only slightly and converters again failed to attain any, significant levels of production activity.
