Ip Indefinitely Closes Its Bastrop Pulp Mill

International Paper (IP) has indefinitely closed its 450,000 t kraft and fluff pulp mill at Bastrop in the US state of Louisiana due to weak demand. IP will commence negotiations with employee representatives regarding the future of the mill's 550 employees in the near future. The US group had initially planned to reduce the production of kraft and fluff pulp at the Bastrop site through stoppages by an estimated 50,000-60,000 t. To achieve this goal, production was announced to be halted between 9 November and 5 January for the duration of seven weeks. This decision was now revised due to a lack of orders and the mill was closed with immediate effect until further notice.
