Canada to provide C$1 bn to support domestic pulp and paper industry

The Canadian government announced on 17 June 2009 that it will support the domestic pulp and paper industry with C$1 bn in aid. According to the government, the agreed funding forms part of the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program that will be running for a year and will focus on supporting the environmental and economic sustainability of Canadian pulp and paper manufacturers. The program intends to subsidise every litre of black liquor that is produced between 1 January and 31 December 2009 with C$0.16. Eligible companies that will receive the government funding for black liquor must invest these funds over the next three years to improve energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of their production sites in Canada.
