Stora Enso reorganises its divisions and plans to axe up to 2,000 jobs

Stora Enso aims to generate annual cost savings of €250m by restructuring business divisions and creating a leaner management structure. Most of the cost savings will be realised by the end of 2009, the rest by the end of 2010. The planned measures will reportedly affect up to 2,000 employees; the final figure is subject to the outcome of negotiations with employee representatives. Stora Enso mainly wants to trim senior and middle management levels and downscale staff functions and country organisations by one third. Some key functions such as Wood Supply, Logistics and Energy are to be brought closer to the individual business segments, while other key functions such as Human Resources, Purchasing, Communications, and Research and Development are to be reduced to a minimum where possible in the individual countries. CEO Jouko Karvinen explained that the measures that Stora Enso implemented in the last years to prepare the company for the future had only been the beginning. The task now is to create a simpler structure that will allow fast operative and strategic reactions to the rapid changes in the general economic conditions.
